Sure, it might still catch the intrigued ear of a movie buff drawn in by the allure of a big budget spectacle. But more often it has come to signal brainless popcorn fare featuring poorly developed characters, clichéd and familiar tropes and a de-emphasis on plot in favor of explosions, special effects and other visually stimulating fluff. In other words, think Michael Bay. But despite a cinephile culture that looks down upon these larger than life romps, there is no denying a broad appeal and lucrative value that have seen titles like “Captain America: Civil War” and even the widely reviled “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” rank among the highest-grossing films to be released so far this year. That level of success can be chalked up to a number of factors, nearly all of which are tied to the use of that big budget. By throwing buckets of money into the production of a movie, you can reel in A-list actors, piggyback on major film franchises and invest all sorts of resources into the promotion and hype of the blockbuster. However, the most eye-catching elements of many supersized contemporary movies are often produced not on an exotic, expansive movie set, but in a small digital arts studio office. Computer-generated imagery, more popularly known by its CGI acronym, has enabled films to capture just about every piece of science fiction and fantasy available to the human imagination. It has taken film-goers through the time from the Jurassic Park-driven age of dinosaurs all the way up to numerous takes on the look of our distant, as-of-yet-unseen future. Even stories once believed to be unfilmable, such as Where the Wild Things Are, Cloud Atlas and Life of Pi, have arrived on the big screen thanks to CGI. In the hands of the proper graphic artists and technologically savvy talents, CGI can transport the viewer seamlessly into a believable yet spell-binding world unlike our own. But placed into wrong and inadequate hands, the viewer can be taken right out of a moment they would otherwise be invested in, glimpsing behind the curtain of the film production and being forced instead to become aware of the shoddy work that has taken place behind the camera. While one might think that money, pressure and a thorough editing process might be enough to prevent any instances of poor CGI making it to the big screen, the history of blockbuster movies would suggest otherwise. It seems like an entitled and unappreciative complaint to bemoan the poor computer graphics inherent in a handful of movies. After all, CGI has given us such iconic Hollywood figures as E.T. and the shark from Jaws, not to mention allowing DreamWorks to bring life to some of the greatest kid’s films ever made. But those successes only serve to further increase the lofty expectations placed upon CGI-heavy blockbusters. If we know what incredible visuals can be achieved through well done computer graphic imaging and we also understand the eye-popping riches invested by studios in so many big budget projects, then why wouldn’t we expect only the best that the technology has to offer? That’s why these 10 examples of CGI done wrong in film stand out as examples of doing so little with so much opportunity. Enjoy this insightful behind the scenes for the short film "Beyond"...When a rock fall traps his parents inside a burning car, a 7-year-old boy must find the hero within him in order to save their lives... Credits: Writer / Director: Jeremy Haccoun Stars: Aidan Flynn, Jolene Kay, Michael Dane Cinematography by Sergio Arguello Music by Siddhartha Barnhoorn Produced by Violetta Ekpe Director's note: 'Beyond' was shot on Red Epic, in Los Angeles, and in the Mojave Desert. Ever since I started directing, I’ve been wanting to create an intense, epic action sequence - not just spectacle, but a scene where characters we care about do extraordinary things to overcome hopeless situations. The story of this little boy brings together all the things I love about filmmaking - action, suspense, tears, hope and heroism. The goal was to create something unusually epic for a short and offer the audience 10 minutes fresh out of a Hollywood blockbuster. The plan is to use 'Beyond' as a showcase to attract similar feature film projects and/or find the funding for my own spec scripts, which are all in the adventure/fantasy genre. Jeremy fed himself with old classics first, then with the many adventure and fantasy films of the early Spielberg era. At the age of 10, he fell in love with Raiders of the Lost Ark. From then on, he has only one thing in mind: make movies. Jeremy made his first short at 11, a 40’ fantasy film shot in VHS. Followed dozens of ambitious shorts among which Alchemy, an adventure epic, and The Battery, a 1’ chain reaction that won a few awards before getting a national release in French theaters. Jeremy started directing professionally on commercial shoots. After his debut spot for Swatch won an award in Cannes, he went on to direct his first TV spot at age 21 and landed his first million-dollar budget at age 24. He kept shooting commercials worldwide for clients such as Xbox, Coors or Disney, gaining experience of large-scale shoots and FX heavy post-productions. Recent spots include a movie-like campaign starring Leonardo DiCaprio and a Spikes Award winner for Subaru Interactive. His previous fantasy short film Paradox earned him many awards including Best Short, Best Screenplay, got selected at Tribeca and a dozen other festivals around the world. He lives in Los Angeles. Check out this 720p version of the VFX Breakdown Reel from the great talent at Pixomodo as they create VFX for "Game of Thrones: Season 2"! Facilities Across Europe, US and China Create Fire-Breathing Dragons, Set Extensions of Westeros and More for HBO's Highly Acclaimed Series. International visual effects company Pixomondo is the primary VFX provider for the second season of HBO's award-winning fantasy television series "Game of Thrones" created by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Season two features ten, one-hour episodes and premiered on April 1, 2012. Under the guidance of show VFX supervisor, Pixomondo's Rainer Gombos, and Pixomondo visual effects supervisor Juri Stanossek, the ambitious project is led by the company's Stuttgart facility, one of 12 Pixomondo studios around the world. After the filming in Belfast, Croatia and Iceland for about 150 shooting days was complete, plates were turned over to Pixomondo. Though episodes were tackled primarily in order, Pixomondo began prepping the more difficult, VFX-heavy shots long before plates were received. On set, Gombos used storyboards and had an on-site previs team as well as a production designer so the shots were fully visualized before the cameras started rolling. Many of these complicated shots involved dragons, which were first revealed in the season one finale. "The dragons mature this season so their look is more fierce," Gombos explained. "In the first season, the dragons are freshly hatched so they are more delicate. We changed the proportions up a bit and made the spikes more prominent so the dragons are much more menacing now." Pixomondo's renowned creature specialist, Dan Katcher, who works out of the company's Burbank office and designed many of the dinosaurs in 'Terra Nova,' helped to model the new dragons. The Pixomondo team in Frankfurt tweaked the designs further and provided the animation to realistically bring the dragons to life. In addition to creating the dragons, Pixomondo also did a substantial amount of set extensions, battle augmentation and some additional creature work. The on-set production designer helped develop the look of the sweeping shots. Then Pixomondo was tasked with capturing the essence of Westeros, the fictional continent in which the series takes place. For the first season of "Game of Thrones," dogs were substituted for the direwolves, an unusually large and intelligent species of wolf in Westeros. In the second season, actual wolves were used. Using a variety of filming tricks and techniques, the shots were augmented to make the wolves appear larger and then composited with the background and actor passes for the final shots. "The entire process of filming the wolves was quite complicated and required a great amount of precision, but the final shots with the supersized wolves really deliver the right impact," said Gombos. Nine of Pixomondo's twelve facilities contributed to the project. Stuttgart served as the lead and did most of the set extension work and matte paintings as well as creature work and some CG gore. Frankfurt created the dragons and Berlin worked on shots featuring fluid simulations. London and Burbank handled compositing and 3D work though Beijing composited the shots with the direwolves and was also responsible for some of the long establishing shots as well as crowd replication and matte paintings. Munich, Hamburg and Shanghai assisted with compositing, with Shanghai also contributing to 3D shots. Episode turnaround time has varied greatly depending on the complexity of the work. Unlike many shows, principal photography was mostly complete when the plates were turned over to Pixomondo in December 2011. Delivery of episodes has ranged anywhere from six weeks to four months and episodes feature anywhere from 60 to over 140 VFX shots. In addition to Pixomondo, Gombos enlisted two outside vendors, Baked FX and Entity FX, to work on about 250 shots. The companies handled mostly paint fixes and cleanup, as well as some rain and snow augmentation.

*Note This video is from the 2009 videogame X-Men: Origins Wolverine. The Wolverine 2013 was rumored at one point to be Rated R. A film like this CGI scene will blow people away! This is an example of how I hope The Wolverine 2013 will be! Subscribe for more gaming videos! Wolverine is being hunted by a group of soldiers in an urban environment. He is wearing a shredded uniform reminiscent of the costume seen in the X-Men films, indicating that this may take place in a later time. The Wolverine is an upcoming American/Australian superhero film featuring the Marvel Comics character Wolverine and is intended to be the sixth installment in the X-Men film series. Hugh Jackman reprises his role from previous films as the title character with James Mangold directing a screenplay written by Christopher McQuarrie, Scott Frank, and Mark Bomback, based on the 1982 limited series Wolverine by Chris Claremont and Frank Miller. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a 2009 hack and slash action-adventure game loosely based on the film of the same name. The game release coincided with the release of the film on May 1, 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Wii, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable. The game was developed primarily by Raven Software, who used Unreal engine technology to develop the game. Amaze Entertainment developed the Wii and PS2 ports and Griptonite Games developed the PSP and DS ports. Origins was published by Activision. The Uncaged Edition was released for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. When Wolverine sustains injuries, chunks of his flesh and clothes are removed. His injuries heal in real-time. Origins takes influences from games such as God of War and Devil May Cry. The Uncaged version also features a large amount of blood and gore. Enemies can be dismembered in several ways in addition to the graphic display of Wolverine's healing factor. Combat relies on three options - light attacks, heavy attacks, and grabs. Another form of attack is the lunge, which allows Wolverine to quickly close the distance to an enemy. Wolverine can also use the environment to his advantage, such as by impaling foes on spikes. During combat, Wolverine's rage meter builds up, and when full allows him to use more devastating attacks, like the claw spin and a berserker mode, which increases Wolverine's claw strength until his Rage Meter empties. The PlayStation 2 and Wii versions are less graphic, with less language and slightly different combat. Feral senses are still obtained, which can detect doors, traps, enemies and sentinel observers. Lunges must be performed at closer distances. Experience (XP) is collected from defeating enemies, completing missions, defeating all enemies, destroying all turrets, and defeating bosses within a certain time frame. The XP is used to purchase upgrades. The story is a combination of the Wolverine backstory explored in the film and an original plot created by Raven Software, which was influenced by major events in the X-Men comic series.

CGI Showreel HD: Realtime UK Fluids Reel 2015. Featured on http://www.cgmeetup.net/home/realtime-uk-fluids-reel-2015/ We have been developing and improving our Fluids pipeline over the past few years, including integrating Houdini into our pipeline. Houdini is used in many Blockbuster feature films, and open source formats such as Alembic have allowed to to integrate it into our 3Ds-Max and Vray pipeline. We have successfully completed projects containing very heavy water simulations, and this reel shows clips from some of our projects and also internal RnD. Our average fluid simulations contain 20 – 30 million particles and can reach up to and over 100 million. We chose Houdini as it can handle these massive simulations with amazing speed, giving us the ability to create stunning feature film quality effects. www.realtimeuk.com SUBSCRIBE to CGMeetup for more inspiring content! http://www.cgmeetup.net YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/CGMeetUp Facebook https://www.facebook.com/CGMeetup Twitter https://twitter.com/cgmeetup Google+ https://plus.google.com/113407808890523366442/ Dailymotion http://www.dailymotion.com/user/CGMeetup Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/cgmeetup/ Instagram https://instagram.com/cgmeetup/ ------------------------- Realtime UK Fluids Reel 2015, RealtimeUK Fluids Reel September 2015, Realtime UK Fluids Reel, Realtime UK, RealtimeUK, CGI, VFX, Fluids, Realtime UK Fluids Showreel

Enjoy this short film...When a rock fall traps his parents inside a burning car, a 7 year-old boy must find the hero within him in order to save their lives... Credits: Writer / Director: Jeremy Haccoun Stars: Aidan Flynn, Jolene Kay, Michael Dane Cinematography by Sergio Arguello Music by Siddhartha Barnhoorn Produced by Violetta Ekpe Director's note: 'Beyond' was shot on Red Epic, in Los Angeles and in the Mojave Desert. ———————————————————— WHO EXACTLY ARE THECGBROS? - http://bit.ly/2bzGzYQ ———————————————————— Thanks for SUBSCRIBING -http://bit.ly/2c8Fl8u TheCGBros Newsletter- http://tinyurl.com/j5njcxd Web - TheCGBros http://www.thecgbros.com YouTube https://www.youtube.com/user/TheCGBro Facebook https://www.facebook.com/TheCGBro Twitter https://twitter.com/TheCGBros Google+ https://plus.google.com/104301021746334584641 Pinterest https://www.pinterest.com/TheCGBros/ Tumblr http://thecgbros.tumblr.com/ ———————————————————— If you’re a CGI ARTIST, ANIMATOR, FILM MAKER or STUDIO and would like your project showcased on our TheCGBros please visit http://bit.ly/2byguiS ———————————————————— TheCGBros have permission to broadcast this video and or it is part of Creative Commons the http://creativecommons.org/licenses/b....
